Other People's Flowers exhibition flyer, Carolyn Misterek

3–27 November 2022 · HOMME Gallery, 2000 L St NW, Washington, DC

Other People's Flowers

A solo exhibition of paintings by Carolyn Misterek

A body of work completed in the late summer and early fall of 2022, made in a period of major personal transition. Misterek followed her inspiration toward flowers — intuitive, often automatic paintings that became meditations on stewardship, compassion, and presence.

Carolyn Misterek is a fine artist based in Maryland. After a studio art degree from the University of Minnesota, she spent over a decade as a UX designer and ran her own handbag label, MATINE, before returning to painting full time in 2019. Her work has since shown widely and sold to collectors around the world.

Landscapes of Dreaming

A solo exhibition of paintings by Pelin Yazar

Eleven large-format acrylic works exploring color in conversation with itself — landscapes built from pure, splashing pigment and a gardener's sense of balance. Pelin is a dual citizen of Turkey and Canada with a 25-year career spanning solo shows across Europe, Canada, and the United States.

“The major composition of her paintings evoke her love and respect for nature… the color sparkles.” — Chimène Ishaka, Galerie 5 continents

About the Curator

Mallory Knodel is an independent curator working between New York and Washington, DC. EXP Arts grew out of two solo exhibitions she curated at HOMME Gallery — Other People's Flowers with Carolyn Misterek and Landscapes of Dreaming with Pelin Yazar — built on the conviction that great work deserves a room, an audience, and someone willing to make the introduction.

Her own practice spans photography and illustration, including a solo show, Social Movement Photog, and an illustrated book, How the Internet Really Works. EXP Arts is the next chapter: a curatorial practice with a new gallery space opening soon in Washington, DC.
